Course aims
This course aims at giving some background knowledge in Russian 20th century literature with the help of a survey in life and works of this period’s prominent writers. The analysis of these writers’ texts from different viewpoints (e.g. from the viewpoint of conteporaries’ criticism and from the viewpoint of the current trends in literary theory) will be given.
Brief description of the course
The focus on the life and art of one prominent Russian 20th century writer will contribute to the expansion of students’ existing knowledge of the literary situation of the period. During lectures and seminars students will systematically overview the life and art of the writer in question (something that is not so easy to do in traditional courses in literary history).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After the completion of the course, students are expected 1) to know how to evaluate the art of most prominent Russian 20th century writers, and 2) to understand the role they played in Russian and world literature. Students are also expected to know the literary circles the writer in question belonged to, and to evalute the writers’ works 1) from the viewpoint of his or her contemporaries, 2) from the viewpoint of the literary theory of today.
