Course aims
To understand the economic underpinnings of global interstate conflict including the role of energy in geopolitical competition.
Brief description of the course
The first half will be an introduction to the concept of Geoeconomics. During this time, lectures and readings will follow the themes presented in “Geoeconomics” by Klaus Solberg Søilen.

Subsequently, the course will cover “Global Economic Disparity: A Dynamic Force in Geoeconomic Competition of Superpowers” by Jae Wan Chung. This will offer insight into the nature of resource and economic competition and its resultant conflict. The role of energy resources in geopolitical competition will be discussed in detail.

The course will also cover current events each week, and students will be expected to keep abreast of developments in the global economy.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will understand and be able to explain the economics of state-based global conflict;
- will have in-depth knowledge of the main issues in energy security analyses within the framework of foreign policy;
- will also develop presentation and writing skills, and advance critical reading skills as pertaining to popular media.
