Course aims
To develop a deeper understanding of the discussions and dimensions of the globalising world and the capitalist world economy, using introductory theories to this topic with a focus on the analysis of the growing discontent.
Brief description of the course
Introduction. Objectives and organisation of the course. The concept and main domains of globalisation. Globalisation as historical phenomenon. Economic, social and cultural dimensions of globalisation. The capitalist system and its impact on globalization and the impact of globlisation on the continuation of the capitalist system. Waves of globalisation. Transformation of global order and power. The processes of social and cultural globalization. Global formations: social theories on the global condition Political globalisation: world system, states and citizens. The process of deglobalization.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is acquinted with a multidisciplinary selection of globalisation theorists, covering economic, social, cultural and political globalisation.
- is capable of comparing and analysing the theories according to various schools of thought.
- can associate the theories with empirical developments and potentially apply them in empirical analysis.
