Course aims
Core subject; to pass on the knowledge about main molecular cloning steps in prokaryotes.
Brief description of the course
Main steps in gene cloning, plasmid components, restriction enzymes, cDNA synthesis, gene synthesis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), primer design, DNA and RNA analysis, DNA sequencing, BLAST.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Ability to design primers and perform all main molecular cloning steps. Ability to find and analyse potential drawbacks in cloning process.
Teacher
MSc Margit Kaldmäe
Additional information
Student should have some previous knowledge about cell biology, DNA structure, DNA replication, transcription, translation. If previous knowledge is lacking but still there is a wish to participate, more effort is needed from the student (extrawork with literature) during the course.
Working students most likely have to make some changes in their work schedule – usually otherwise it is hard to pass given course.
If you miss the practical work with a good reason (final capacity 85-94%) lecturer has still the right to give some extra homework.
If the final practical work capacity is below 85%, lecturer has the right to grade the outcome as „F“ (fail, insufficient).
