Course aims
General principles and molecular mechanisms in the living cell.
Brief description of the course
The universal features of cell. Mechanisms of cell specialization. Communication of cells. Development of multicellular organisms. Cell biology applications. Stem cells.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- have acquired the ability to explain the characteristics of a cell as a minimal self-reproducing structure;
- has ability to explain general pathways of the regulation of cell proliferation;
- can explain the communication between cells and the processes leading to cell differentiation;
- has ability to explain applications of stem cells in medicine and tissue engineering; further perspectives on directed differentiation;
- relates the basic concepts and processes of cell biology to the topics of the high school biology curriculum and illustrates them (including with the help of models/visuals) in a fact-based manner;
- solves more complex problems related to cell biology (e.g. cases in the context of health and biotechnology), chooses appropriate methods and argues conclusions and possible effects based on evidence;
- uses suitable digital tools (including TI-based tools if necessary) responsibly and transparently when analyzing data/figures/tables;
- contributes to group work and, if necessary, initiates and organizes cooperation, valuing the contribution of team members and implementing creative solutions.
