Course aims
To support the development of a knowledge base to orientate onself in the diversity of vertebrate animals.
To develop knowledge and skills to know and describe the general building plans, anatomy and systematics of vertebrate animals.
Brief description of the course
Introduction to vertebrate animal diversity, description of the classes and more common subunits, their typical bodyplans and characteristics of anatomy and ecology.
In labs the topics introduced in lectures are reinforced by practical tasks. Work with identification keys will be introduced.
Independent work
The topics not discussed in contactlectures and themes which enquire deeper knowledge, will be studied independently using course materials and literature given. Independent preparation for labs will be neccessary.
A presentation will be given to introduce given species or animal groups in lecture and further research into scientific articles about the topic will be needed to prepare a paper which will be presented at the end of the course. Students are also asked to write a review on such a paper.
Learning outcomes in the course
The student
-will be able to orientate himself in diversity of vertebrate animals.
-knows systematics of vertebrate animals in estonian/english and latin on given level and is able to assigne animals to these groups from given examples (pictures).
-will be able to describe and compare the abundance, distribution and anatomy of different animal groups
-will be able to compile a paper according to the requierments.
- will be able to find a orientate itself in scientific literature.
Assessment methods
Written exam with open questions.
The student is allowed to the exam after: passing midterm tests, passing labs, carrying out a presentation and successfully presenting a paper.
