Brief description of the course

The C1.1 course focuses on the use and analysis of more complex grammatical structures in Italian. Grammar instruction covers the use of verb moods and tenses in main and subordinate clauses, the system of consecutio temporum, means of expressing aspect, and subordinate constructions involving the infinitive, gerund, and participle. Reported speech and its stylistic functions are also addressed.To develop oral proficiency, students engage in discussions on current issues in Italian society. They independently select topics, present them in the form of short presentations, and participate in subsequent discussions. In written expression, students produce short essays and analytical texts, with particular attention paid to identifying and correcting errors and achieving stylistic precision. Reading and listening activities are based on complex original literary and essayistic texts, as well as authentic audio and video materials, through which students develop the ability to understand nuanced spoken and written language. Independent work includes the use of dictionaries, extensive reading, listening tasks, and the systematic development of writing skills. Students who have proficiency in Italian at level B2.2 may register for the course.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- selects appropriate verb moods and tenses in complex compound and subordinate sentence structures and is able to justify these choices using metalinguistic terminology;
- communicates fluently and spontaneously in Italian, using a broad vocabulary and a register appropriate to the communicative situation;
- produces grammatically accurate, stylistically refined, and well-argued texts in Italian;
- understands extensive and complex original texts in Italian and analyses them from syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic perspectives; understands authentic spoken Italian texts, is able to convey their content, and identifies their substantive and stylistic features;
- uses advanced grammatical and lexical resources of the Italian language accurately and with sensitivity to context in both spoken and written communication.
