Brief description of the course

The course content corresponds to the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for the relevant proficiency level. The course focuses on developing independent language use in both everyday and more formal communicative situations. Students work with different types of spoken and written texts dealing with topics of general and current interest, as well as personal themes related to their own experiences and lifestyles. The course develops the ability to understand a variety of texts, summarise information, express opinions, and justify points of view. Grammar instruction includes the study and consolidation of personal pronouns, prepositions, transitive and intransitive verbs, the selection of auxiliary verbs, and the forms and functions of the conditional and imperative moods. Oral activities focus on descriptive and argumentative communication as well as presentation skills. In written expression, emphasis is placed on producing coherent texts, such as opinion pieces, descriptions, and summaries. The cultural component introduces aspects of Italian society, everyday life, and other cultural references that support linguistic understanding and contextually appropriate communication. The course combines language development with an analytical and culturally informed approach to foster students' functional and reflective language competence. Students who have proficiency in Italian at level A2 may register for the course.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands oral texts on everyday and topical subjects delivered in clear Italian and identifies the main information, key details, and simple arguments;
- reads and analyses short written texts (e.g. articles, opinion pieces, and descriptions) and identifies their main ideas and internal connections;
- produces structured descriptive, narrative, and opinion texts that are coherent in content and linguistically accurate;
- expresses and justifies opinions on everyday and culture-related topics and participates in dialogues and, where appropriate, short presentations;
- is familiar with the main features of Italian cultural and social life and takes into account Italian language use and cultural norms in both oral and written communication.
