Brief description of the course

Students who have proficiency in Italian at level B2.1 may register for the course. The course develops the learner’s discursive and argumentative competence, focusing on content analysis and academic expression. Reading and listening tasks include longer speeches, interviews, podcasts, newspaper articles and essays, with practice in understanding both details and argumentative structure. Grammar work deepens the use of reported speech, the conditional mood, narrative verb tenses, cohesion markers and argumentative connectors. In oral expression, students develop skills for participating in discussions, justifying viewpoints and responding to objections, and deliver structured monologues on current topics. Written expression focuses on producing argumentative and analytical texts with logical structure, coherence and academic style. The course strengthens the learner’s ability to use Italian flexibly and meaningfully in both academic and societal contexts.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands articles, essays and other texts dealing with contemporary social, cultural and professional topics and analyses their main arguments and reasoning;
- engages in discussion, presenting and justifying personal viewpoints and responding to counterarguments in a reasoned manner;
- produces argumentative and analytical texts, supporting viewpoints with relevant examples;
- uses academic vocabulary and an appropriate register in both oral and written expression.
