Brief description of the course

Students who have proficiency in Italian at level B1.2 may register for the course. The course focuses on the structure of the Italian language. In morphology and syntax, attention is given to nuances of article use, comparative forms of adjectives, the use of pronouns and adverbs, and the functions of imperfetto and other verb forms. In syntax, the course covers complex sentences, reported speech, relative pronouns, indirect questions and word order. At the text level, students analyse narrative and descriptive texts of medium difficulty, practise summarising and identifying key information and details. They learn to produce descriptive and explanatory texts of 150–200 words. Oral expression includes coherent descriptions of experiences and events, as well as concise presentations of films or texts. The course provides a strong foundation for B2-level oral and written communication, including the ability to justify and argue for one’s viewpoints.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has a systematic command of Italian phonetics, morphology and syntax and can analyse and explain these phenomena from a philological perspective;
- uses B2-level grammar and vocabulary and avoids interference errors characteristic of B1 level;
- applies more complex sentence structures in both oral and written expression;
- understands texts of medium difficulty and can summarise them meaningfully;
- expresses themselves fluently in Italian, justifying their viewpoints and distinguishing between different communicative situations and registers.
