Brief description of the course

The course focuses on using Italian in everyday and academically structured communicative situations, expanding learners’ vocabulary, grammatical competence and cultural awareness. Students analyse and interpret short oral and written texts dealing with social, cultural and everyday topics, including lifestyle, education, working life, leisure and movement in public space. Instruction includes the consolidation of A2-level grammatical structures: past and future verb forms (passato prossimo, imperfetto, futuro semplice), modal verbs, the use of pronouns, comparative forms of adjectives, common connectors and basic complex sentences. In oral expression, students practise dialogues, short presentations and descriptions of everyday situations, with attention to basic argumentation and expressing opinions. In written expression, the focus is on producing short texts (descriptions, explanations, brief messages, emails) in accordance with academic language conventions. The cultural component introduces Italian everyday culture, communication norms, politeness strategies, regional features and cultural references. Through texts and audiovisual materials, students explore cultural meanings that support linguistic comprehension and context-sensitive communication. The course develops the ability to connect linguistic expression with cultural practices and to use Italian appropriately in different communicative situations. The pre-requisite for the registration is A1 level in Italian.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands short oral texts delivered in slow and clear Italian and identifies specific information on everyday and culturally familiar topics;
- reads and analyses short written texts (announcements, notices, simple articles, emails) and identifies key details and main connections;
- uses A2-level vocabulary and grammar (including passato prossimo, imperfetto, futuro semplice, modal verbs, pronouns, connectors) to produce simple oral and written texts;
- composes short descriptive and explanatory texts on everyday and culture-related topics, following principles of academic language use;
- participates in structured dialogues, expresses simple opinions and explains personal viewpoints using coherent phrases;
- identifies and applies key elements of Italian everyday culture and communication norms (e.g. politeness strategies, social routines, cultural references) appropriately in simple communicative situations.
