Brief description of the course

The course focuses on the systematic acquisition of Italian at the beginner level, developing students' ability to understand and use simple language structures needed for everyday communication. The course covers the acquisition of basic vocabulary and grammar, including the use of articles, pronouns, adjectives, verb conjugation, and simple past and future constructions. Students develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, with an emphasis on understanding short and clear texts and producing simple spoken and written messages. They learn to ask and answer basic questions, describe themselves, other people, and everyday situations, use Italian in routine communicative contexts, and create short messages and texts. The course also supports the development of pronunciation and intonation and introduces the main features of Italian language and culture necessary for further language and cultural studies within the discipline.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands short spoken utterances delivered in slow and clear Italian;
- reads and understands short and simple texts (e.g. notices, advertisements, short emails) and identifies specific information in them;
- uses basic vocabulary and grammar, including articles, pronouns, adjectives, the presente indicativo, and simple past and future constructions, to produce short spoken and written sentences;
- writes short texts on everyday topics (e.g. self-introduction, family, daily routine), using vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate to the A1 level;
- participates in simple dialogues, asks and answers basic questions (e.g. about name, place of residence, age, and preferences);
- uses appropriate polite expressions; pronounces basic Italian vocabulary intelligibly and demonstrates intonation and rhythm characteristic of the A1 level.
