Course aims
Provide an overview of the Western music history (styles, genres and trends) from the Middle Ages to Classicism and to establish connections with other fields of art and cultural history in general. Develop the ability to listen and to analyze the most important masterpieces. Develop the ability to distinguish and to recognize music from different periods and styles. Introduce and help to understand the basic compositional techniques of different ages.
Brief description of the course
Lecture topics: MIDDLE AGES: Medieval Gregorian chant • genesis and development of medieval secular song and instrumental music • early polyphony • the genesis and development of Notre Dame`s polyphony • RENAISSANCE: 14th century music: Ars Nova and trecento • Machaut`s vocal music • the Franco-Flemish generation 15-16 th century: Desprez and Lassus • Late renaissance church music in Rome and Venice, Palestrina and Gabrieli • 16th century secular polyphonic song in Italy and France: madrigal, chanson • BAROQUE: new genres and style: opera (Monteverdi), a concert suite, sonata, fugue, oratorio, passion, cantata, recitative and aria, baroque trio • Baroque in France and England: Lully and Purcell • Baroque in Germany: Schütz and Bach (emphasis on vocal music) • Handel's operas and oratorios • CLASSICISM: new forms, genres and style: sonata form, symphonic cycle, classical sonata, symphony orchestra and string quartet • Gluck and opera reform of opera seria • Haydn (emphasis on symphonic music) • Mozart (emphasis on operas and symphonies ) • Beethoven (emphasis on symphonic music and piano sonatas).Independent work: Read and learn obligatory literature, preparing for listening tests: listen and remember music, write an essay on relations between the selected period’s spirit of the era, music, art history, religion and similar topics.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The learner has an overview of the Western music history (Middle Ages to Classicism), it’s styles, genres, composers, and the major new developments, is able to establish connections between the same period in other artistic fields, is capable recognizing different styles of music by hearing, knows the most important works, knows musical terminology and is able to talk and discuss on topics associated with course program.
