Course aims
To present an overview of ballet history, its formation and evolution, to analyse the works of major choreographers, to learn and distinguish different styles of ballet.
Brief description of the course
The course deals with ballet history since the 16th century. The themes treated are the social status of the professional dancer throughout centuries, the relations between the dancer and the choreographer, national and gender identity in ballet and their change over time. Major ballet works (La Sylphide, Giselle, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Coppelia) and their different versions are analysed.
Close collaboration is done with the teacher of practical ballet classes so that students can try different styles on their own bodies and thereby better integrate theory and practice.
