Course aims
To give an overview and systematized knowledge about basic concepts of Japanese aesthetics, and different styles of architecture and genres of art.
Brief description of the course
The course gives an overview of Japanese history of art, its periods, genres and schools. During the course will be introduced some basic medieval and early modern aesthetic concepts, such as aware, wabi-sabi, yūgen, iki, but also other basic concepts, such as ma. Course gives an overview of styles of Japanese architecture, and different art genres and forms (including sculpture, ceramics, traditional handycraft, painting, graphics, calligraphy). Through visual material provided in lectures will be drawn students attention to the aesthetic and composition concepts that become evident in different Japanese art forms, genres and schools. During the course students will be given different home assignments.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has systematized knowledge on Japanese different styles of architecture and art genres, forms and schools;
- knows basic concepts of Japanese aesthetics and is able to describe the forms of these concepts in art pieces;
- knows the periods of Japanese art history and is able to characterize principal art genres, schools and artist.
