The course aims to give an overview of the history, genres and main themes of Japanese theatre, film and popular culture.
Brief description of the course
The course focuses on the three closely related cultural phenomena – theatre, film and popular culture. The course is built up basing on different genres and important themes in these cultural fields. The course provides an overview of the historic genres, aesthetics, main themes and artistic techniques in Japanese theatre and film. During lectures and seminars will be given an overview of the history of popular culture and its important topics, such as erotica, nature, religion, post apocalyptic worldview, identity formation, etc. The course aims to be interactive and uses various classroom activities and learning methods, such as lectures, seminars, presentations, visual materials, etc. The course includes also an e-course where students are given different assignments of independent work.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows main historic periods and important topics of Japanese theatre and film, and is able to shortly summarize the characteristics of different genres;
- is able to describe various phenomena of Japanese popular culture and to analyse their socio-cultural background;
- knows main genres of anime and manga and is able to briefly describe them.
