Brief description of the course

The course addresses a single topic related to the instructor’s research interests. The topic changes each year. In the current academic year, the focus is on religion and magic in ancient Egypt. The course examines Egyptian religion from the 4th millennium BCE to the end of the Roman Empire (4th–6th centuries CE). Various aspects of religion are explored, including concepts of the divine, myths, theo-cosmogonic systems, rituals, magic, temple cults, and religion in everyday life, among others.
Independent work consists of studying the course textbook and presenting a seminar paper at the end of the course. The paper must be submitted to the instructor in written form two days before the presentation, presented orally, and defended through answering questions based on it.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- explains the development and key characteristics of the religious processes and phenomena examined in the course, situates them within their historical, social and cultural contexts, and relates them to other religious and cultural processes;
- analyses sources and scholarly literature related to the topics addressed in the course, using appropriate concepts from religious studies and identifying the roles of key actors, ideas and practices;
- reflects critically on the religious processes and phenomena examined and formulates and justifies their interpretations both orally and in writing.
