Course aims
"Analysis of Religious Processes" is a course that addresses various topics in the study of religion. The specific topic changes each academic year. In the 2025/2026 academic year, the course aims to provide an overview of ancient Egyptian religion - religion and magic in ancient Egyptian society.
Brief description of the course
The course addresses a single topic related to the instructor’s research interests. The topic changes each year. In the current academic year, the focus is on religion and magic in ancient Egypt. The course examines Egyptian religion from the 4th millennium BCE to the end of the Roman Empire (4th–6th centuries CE). Various aspects of religion are explored, including concepts of the divine, myths, theo-cosmogonic systems, rituals, magic, temple cults, and religion in everyday life, among others.
Independent work consists of studying the course textbook and presenting a seminar paper at the end of the course. The paper must be submitted to the instructor in written form two days before the presentation, presented orally, and defended through answering questions based on it.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of ancient Egyptian religion;
- is familiar with Egyptian history and the sources for the study of Egyptian religious history;
- is able to critically analyse the role of religion in ancient Egyptian society.
