Course aims
Systematic philological overview of the German lexical structure. The ability to analyse morphological, etymological, semantic and phraseological characteristics of the lexis and word formation processes.
Brief description of the course
General characteristics of the structure of the German vocabulary. Development on the vocabulary. Language contact. Phraseology. Analysis of the meaning of words. Paradigmatic relations within the vocabulary. Socio- and psycholinguistic aspects. Lexicography. Collocation and valence. Deixis. Text and style. Text coherence. Types of texts. Intertextuality. Estonian and German typological comparison. Oral and written language.
Independent work
Independent work comprises the reading of compulsory theoretical literature and lecture notes, acquisition of the relevant terminology and compiling practical tasks.
Learning outcomes in the course
Skills to analyse German vocabulary as well as to see it as a systemic entity. Ability to identify main charakteristics of German text and stile.
