Brief description of the course

Overview of German-language literature from the Middle Ages to the 21st century: Middle Ages, Enlightenment, Baroque, Sturm und Drang, Weimar Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Expressionism, New Objectivity, National Socialism, post-war literature, reunification. Texts from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; emphasis on historical context and intertextuality.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with major periods of German-language literary history, key authors, and representative texts;
- interprets texts within cultural and historical contexts;
- describes societal expectations of literature reflected in theoretical approaches;
- articulates the impact of cultural and literary experience on themselves as a reader.
