Course aims
Selective reading and analysis of some of the greatest books in Italian literature in their historico-cultural, receptional and theoretical contexts in some particular profile (real and fictional/symbolic space-time; narrator and narration; comment and metacomment; tradition and innovation; image and word; the spirit and anatomy of love; I, God, society; the poetic of the oppressed, etc)
Brief description of the course
The course comprises a selection of the following authors and masterpieces in Italian literature: Dante Alighieri, „La Divina Commedia“; Giovanni Boccaccio, „Decamerone“; Francesco Petrarca, “Canzoniere“ and Giacomo Leopardi „Canti“; Ludovico Ariosto „Orlando furioso“ and Torquato Tasso „Gerusalemme liberata“; Carlo Goldoni, „La locandiera“;„Ugo Foscolo, „Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis“; Alessandro Manzoni, „I promessi sposi“; Giovanni Verga, Short stories and „I Malavoglia“.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will have a broad overview of treated masterpieces in the historical context of their birth and later reception and profound knowledge of these works in some specific theoretical and/or cultural profile;
- will be able to analyse extracts from the works under discussion and write an analytical essay on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer.
