Course aims
The objective of the course is to provide the students with an ability to analyze theatre and cinema. To give students an analytical overview of the Spanish cinema and the main Spanish theatrical styles of the 20th century up to now.
Brief description of the course
The dramatic theory and an analysis of a theatrical production. The specificity of the dramatic text and its translation. Spanish theatre in the 20th and 21st century in its cultural and social context. Reading and discussing plays of the following Spanish and Catalan authors: García Lorca, Mihura, Buero-Vallejo, Arrabal, Sinisterra, Sirera, Galceran, Cunillé, Mayorga y Galán. Film theory and film analysis. The Spanish film history and the censorship. The Spanish civil war in theatre and cinema. The documentary film. New Spanish cinema. The pre-requisite for the registration is A1 level in Spanish.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can identify and characterize the most important movements in Spanish theatre and cinema in the 20th and 21st century;
- can situate the works in a temporal and cultural context;
- can understand specificity of the dramatic text and its translation; can reflect upon his/her translation of the dramatic text from Spanish into Estonian;
- can formulate a research question and analyze plays and movies in an academic style;
- has improved his/her vocabulary and capacity of understand movies in Spanish;
- can reflect on his/her learning process.
