Course aims

To provide a survey of the history of the French film.

Brief description of the course

The course begins with an introduction to the French cinema from its origins to the 1930s. Next the focus is on the New Wave of the 1960s and its influence on the development of filmmaking. Each lecture consicts of a theoretical part, to be followed by watching partly and analysing one film from the discussed period.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has gained knowledge of the history of French cinema;
- is able to analyse the structure and narrative of a film.
