Course aims
Attaining methodological competencies for an independent guidance of pupils’ foreign language learning process;
Combining subject knowledge with methodological skills to form a basis for students’ foreign language lesson preparation and teaching;
Supporting the target language development by means of speciality acquisition. Developing students' skills to plan and conduct the learning process as well as to put theory into practice; to prepare them for the first teaching practice.
Brief description of the course
The role of English/German/French/Finnish in Estonian secondary education. Familiarization with the teaching materials in a minor subject. Basic principles and techniques in teaching lexis, grammar and pronunciation. Text-based instruction. Using literary texts and other authentic materials in a foreign language lesson. Raising students’ cultural awareness of the target language community in the classroom. Differentiation of tasks in multilevel classrooms. Error analysis, correcting learners’ oral and written errors. Principles of language test construction and its practical application. Apply the knowledge acquired from foreign language teaching methods' course in real teaching situations.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to select and to employ appropriate techniques for teaching language aspects, such as grammar, lexis and pronunciation;
- is able to search for, to select and to adapt authentic materials from various sources (fiction, media, the Internet, films) for cultural awareness raising purposes in the classroom;
- is able to design study materials for achieving lesson objectives set;
- is knowledgeable about the modern principles of foreign language assessment and evaluation and is able to appraise and develop language tests based on them;
- has been prepared for conducting foreign language classes in various teaching situations.
