Course aims
The goals are: to achieve methodological competence for guiding the learning process at secondary school level in the target language (English, French, German, or Finnish); to give a systematic overview of the basic concepts, theories, principles, and materials of teaching the particular target language, as well as that of its practical application in the school environment; to support the development of the target language by means of speciality acquisition. Developing students' skills to plan and conduct the learning process as well as to put theory into practice; to prepare them for the first teaching practice.
Brief description of the course
The following topics are discussed in lecture-seminar format classes: the role of the target language in Estonian education; an overview of the Estonian national curriculum requirements for the instruction of the target language at basic and upper secondary school level; analysis and evaluation of the teaching materials employed in the target language instruction; the structure of a foreign language lesson, its goals and planning procedures; classroom management techniques (individual, pair, group work, lock-step procedure); providing instructions for oral and written assignments; an overview of language skills and the learning strategies supporting their development; contemporary approaches and methods in foreign language instruction (CLIL, task-based approach, immersion, third language acquisition). The content of the course varies according to the speciality and the traditions of its instruction. Apply the knowledge acquired from foreign language teaching methods' course in real teaching situations.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the essence and the requirements of the national curriculum for the teaching of the target language in Estonian schools;
- is able to elaborate on the basic terms, theories, principles, learning strategies, teaching materials and techniques for the teaching of the target language skills at basic and upper secondary school level;
- is able to set the goals for, plan, analyse a foreign language lesson structure, and guide the learning process by applying contemporary teaching methods;
- is able to design a written lesson plan;
- is able to select appropriate classroom management techniques in accordance with the students’ needs;
- is able to give appropriate oral and written instructions for the target language tasks;
- is able to guide the learning process by applying appropriate learner differentiation strategies;
- knows the status, dynamics, and complexity of the target language in Estonian education and elsewhere in the world;
- has been prepared for conducting foreign language classes in various teaching situations.
