Course aims
The aim of this course is to introduce students to basic topics in sociolinguistics and provide an overview and hands-on experience of sociolinguistic research methods.
Brief description of the course
Topics covered include: what is sociolinguistics about, the role of language in society, attitudes and different varieties of language, issues related to multilingualism, methods in sociolinguistics, language change and variation, language and gender, language and age, social networks and communities of practice, language contact.
The coursework involves an independent study and analysis of primary data as well as presenting one’s work and/or short term project in class.
Working language: English.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
On the successful completion of the course, students should be able to carry out a systematic study of language in use; identify variation; critically review sociolinguistic methods for data collection and analysis. They will have developed skills in team work, carrying out independent research/fieldwork, reporting on one’s own research.
