Brief description of the course
The course covers major theoretical frameworks and genres from the interwar period to the present, including historical fiction, dystopia, metafiction, magic realism, diasporic writing, oral literature, graphic novels, videogames, and creative nonfiction. Authors may include British, American, Irish, Scottish, Indian, Caribbean, Canadian, African, Australian, and New Zealand writers. Emphasis is placed on cultural, political, and historical contexts and on intermediality.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- demonstrates knowledge of Anglophone literatures from the interwar period to the present, recognising diversity and transnational connections;
- analyses texts critically using appropriate theoretical frameworks (existentialism, postmodernism, gender studies, postcolonial theory, ecocriticism, trauma studies, new materialism);
- identifies and compares literary forms, genres, and media, including intermedial relations;
- formulates well-structured interpretations in academic English;
- works independently and collaboratively, uses academic sources responsibly and adheres to academic integrity;
- reflects on literature’s relation to contemporary societal challenges (inequality, representation, sustainability).
