Course aims
The aim is to introduce students to the basic aspects of phonetics and phonology, explore the relationship between the phonology and orthography of English, and to provide systematic practice in transcribing English words.
Brief description of the course
The topics under discussion are: the production of speech sounds, the phoneme, the syllable, the stress, intonation and functions of intonation. Each class includes a practical component, e.g. listening exercises, transcriptions and analyses of a transcribed text.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the technical terminology used in discussions of each topic;
- is be able to undertake practical analyses (e.g. explore the relationship between an orthographic and a (morpho)phonological system);
- is able to identify a wide variety of segment types and know how they are produced;
- is able to transcribe a text.
