Course aims

An overview of basic concepts in (inter)cultural studies and developing intercultural communicative competence in language instruction.

Brief description of the course

Different classifications of culture dimensions. Comparing Estonian and other cultures on Hofstede’s charts. Ways of developing intercultural communicative competence.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- Has knowledge about the basic concepts of intercultural studies as well as cultural differences in value orientations and attitudes;
- Is able to distinguish different cultural dimensions, analyse cultural constructs in various contexts and solve the paradoxes of intercultural communication;
- Is able to integrate theory in practice by presenting the required written tasks and receiving a positive graded pass on them.
