Course aims
Core subject. To provide an overview of the development of Estonian and Estonian written language, development processes of the language at different levels and factors that have influenced the development. To develop an understanding of the development of contemporary language norms and state the main stages in the history of written Estonian.
Brief description of the course
Hypothesis of the origin of Estonian: language affinity and language contacts. Historical change in language. Research methods of early history of language, their results: relevant sound changes and changes of grammatical structure. Influence of other languages on the development of the structure and vocabulary of Estonian and the formation of the written language. Estonian dialects and development of an Estonian common written language. Development of spelling system through the centuries. Language reform and planning.
