Course aims
To provide fundamental knowledge on methodological problems of contrasting different languages.
To advance the ability to make a synopsis of specialist research literature and to highlight the problems related to contrasting of the languages.
To shape the skills necessary to analyse the Estonian learner language (error, contrastive and corpus analysis).
Brief description of the course
The course of contrastive linguistic study comprises four blocs:
1. review lectures on methodology of contrastive linguistic studies and methods of analysis
2. review lectures on crucial issues of phonetics, lexicology, word derivation, morphology and syntax of Estonian (in view of the learner of Estonian as the second and the foreign language)
3. learner language error analysis and contrastive analysis, corpus-based analysis of learner’s language usage and contrasting of the results obtained with corpus-based analysis of use of the Estonian literary language
4. examining of the specialist literature, discussion of the problems at colloquium
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
1. Student will have mastered skill to read specialist research literature, to highlight essential problems, to review and make a synopsis of specialist literature.
2. Student will have mastered the methodological foundations of contrastive language study; he or she will differentiate strengths and weaknesses of error, contrastive and language use corpus-based analysis.
3. Student will have evolved the ability to see the links and coincidences of analogy between learner’s native language and the language learned, he or she will differentiate learner language’s universal and language specific phenomena. Student will have evolved the ability to analyse and motivate the phenomena characteristic to learner’s language usage.
