Course aims

Develop a skill to summarise English texts on journalism, literature and science in Estonian. Introduce the characteristic features of different genres of texts in English and compare them to the respective texts in Estonian. Summary translation process. Terminology managment.

Brief description of the course

Language features of different types of texts (language structures, lexis, et.), highlighting important information, e.g. recognising bias in text, etc. Contrastive analysis of differnt types of texts in English and Estonian; identifying the structural differences of English and Estonian texts concerning journalism, and science.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to identify the peculiarities of English and Estonian texts of different subjects;
- is knowledgeable about the subject-specific lexis;
- is able to identify terms in the text and knows different types of sources define concepts and find target language terms;
- knows all the steps in the summary translation process and can meaningfully use the knowledge.
