Course aims
The aim of the subject is to support the ability to orient oneself in the variability of the Estonian language and to provide basic knowledge of the history of the Estonian language.
Brief description of the course
The subject gives an overview of the variation of the Estonian language in time and space. The course has two parts, the first follows the system of sublanguages (incl. local dialects in particular) and the second the history of language.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the modes of language variation and is able to name them with the right terms;
- knows the most important Estonian sublanguages (written language, oral language, dialects, online language, etc.) and their most important features, is able to name them and find them in texts;
- knows the most important changes in the history of the Estonian language and written language and is able to find in the text the features characteristic of its writing period;
- is familiar with the manifestations of dialect life also in modern ordinary, school and cultural life;
- can search for information about the history and variation of language in dictionaries and corpus.
