Brief description of the course
The course offers a short overview of cinema history and contemporary trends and via seminars analyses key concepts in Film Studies, such as auteur theory, genre, ideology, gender, postmodernism, reception studies, and new cinema history. The course consists of lectures and seminars. For each seminar the students will have read two compulsory articles on the given week’s topic and watched a film from the course curricula. In each seminar the students will have the opportunity to apply the theoretical reading to the analysis of the corresponding week’s film. The course ends with a test with open and analytical answers based on the seminar readings, lectures, and films.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- receives initial knowledge of film culture and Film Studies;
- will have seen and closely analysed several classical films and read and discussed many classical texts of Film Studies;
- has developed their ability to do close textual analysis on films;
- has improved their ability to offer critical argument in a short written form.
