Course aims
To give an overview of the history of non-fiction filmmaking; who is who and what are the moving elements behind the developments.
Brief description of the course
Overview of the developments in documentary film making, starting from the first pioneers. Outstanding persons in nonfiction filmmaking: Flaherty, Vertov, Grierson, Drew, Rouch, etc. Theory of the modes. Historical and artistic causes of the development. Work will be carried on in the form of seminars.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- gets the basic knowledge of the documentary history, is able to orientate in different modes and styles, knows the outstanding masterpieces of the documentary art.
