Course aims
- To learn about international criminal law, international crimes and international criminal courts and tribunals;
- To give a comprehensive overview of acts defined as crimes under international law;
- To give a comprehensive overview of the jurisdiction and cases of different international criminal courts and tribunals;
- To awaken the students’ interest in the possible use of international criminal courts and tribunals to bring to justice individuals accused of international crimes and the use of international criminal courts and tribunals to enforce international humanitarian law and human rights law.
Brief description of the course
Introduction; criminal jurisdiction , immunities of diplomats and consular officials; international crimes; individual responsibility for acts defined as international crimes; the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals; International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda; other international criminal tribunals; International Criminal Court and its jurisdiction.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge about international criminal law;
- knows the responsibility of individuals and the use of courts to enforce international criminal law;
- has knowledge about the jurisdiction and cases of different international criminal tribunals and cases, especially the International Criminal Court;
- understands about the use of international criminal tribunals and courts to enforce international humanitarian law and human rights law.
