Course aims
To provide an overview of possibilities used and being used in studying different artefacts by archaeologists in Estonia and other countries.
Brief description of the course
An overview of the history of artifact studies: typological method, creating series, stylistic analysis, relative dating. Contemporary methods of artefact study will be introduced: micro and macro analysis of production and utilization marks, material research, experimental archaeology, analysis of the meaning of artefacts, etc. The possibilities of studying artefacts made of different materials (silver jewellery, stone, bone and leather artefacts, amber, pottery) will be introduced by specialists engaged in the field.
