Course aims
To provide an overview of Finnish and Karelian archaeology.
Brief description of the course
Finnish and Karelian archaeological artefacts from Stone Age to the beginning of Middle Age will be introduced during lectures. Types of finds, interpretation, chronology, different undertsandings of the development of society will be presented. The main concentration will be on cultural contacts with neighbouring areas, including contemporary Estonian area. An overview of theoretical directions of archaeology in Finland and treatment of ethnic problems among Karelian archaeologists will be given.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Õpilane tunneb Soome ja Karjala arheoloogiat, sealset materiaalset kultuuri kiviajast keskaja alguseni, kultuurikontakte. Teab erinevaid interpretatsioone ning Soome arheoloogia suundi.
