Course aims
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of some key qualitative research methods to analyse empirical data and to practice the use of these methods.
Brief description of the course
In this course, students learn how to understand contemporary society and social phenomena through qualitative approaches. The course consists of lectures, seminars, practical work and independent study. The course gives an overview of some specific qualitative research methods, including thematic analysis and narrative methods.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired basic principles of qualitative data analysis;
- is familiar with the specific qualitative research methods introduced in the course and is able to use these in their own research;
- has acquired knowledge and skills to draw conclusions based on qualitative research findings and to link these to appropriate concepts and theoretical approaches;
- is able to evaluate their own role as a researcher, position themselves in relation to their research topic and research participants, and reflect on how they shape the research process and outcomes.
