Course aims
- understand the opportunities of citizenship for citizens as individuals, in the context of civil society, and democratic states;
- participate as a democratic citizen, balancing effectiveness, self-efficacy, and innovativeness, and coping with radicalizing and depoliticizing manipulations;
- engage in constructive debate, justification, and persuasion;
- judge prudently, including making informed choices, considering diverse normative and ethical viewpoints, managing emotions, and assessing the credibility of information;
- understand their role and responsibility in a democratic system.
Brief description of the course
The subject is aimed at developing civic competencies in democracy, particularly participation, deliberation, judgement and resilience. It covers the concept of citizenship, with its different expectations and opportunities for citizens as individuals, in the context of civil society, and democratic states. Democratic civic participation, its effectiveness, citizen self-efficacy, and innovativeness, the ability to cope with both radicalizing-politicizing and depoliticizing-technocratizing manipulations. The skills in debate, reasoning, and persuasion, as well as prudent decision-making, including making informed choices, considering diverse normative and ethical viewpoints, managing emotions, and assessing the credibility of information. The role and responsibility of citizens in a democratic system.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the opportunities of citizenship for citizens as individuals, in the context of civil society, and democratic states;
- participates as a democratic citizen, balancing effectiveness, self-efficacy, and innovativeness, and coping with radicalizing and depoliticizing manipulations;
