Course aims
The student has an understanding of various forms of inequality and the interdisciplinarity of the development of perceptions and concepts of justice and fairness. Additionally, the student is capable of interpreting key statistics related to inequalities.
Brief description of the course
The interdisciplinary seminar in social sciences and humanities examines what inequality is and how it is perceived. What types of inequalities exist? Beyond financial and socioeconomic inequality, how can we think about cultural or environmental inequality? How are inequality and justice, as well as fairness perceptions, interconnected? The primary focus is on Estonia and its recent history, but we also explore the longer history of inequality and its international structures.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the theoretical approaches to inequality and its perception, as well as the history of inequality and policies aimed at mitigating it;
- is familiar with general statistics on international and domestic inequality;
- is capable of distributive analysis of various policies and everyday situations, considering both the distributional outcomes and how prior inequalities shape current circumstances;
- can identify different facets of inequality beyond basic financial inequality, such as cultural, gender, age-based, racial, and environmental inequalities.
