Course aims
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills that allow them to organize geographic information in sectoral geographic information systems, perform operations and procedures for consultation and spatial analysis, production of graphic outputs in the form of maps thematic, perform data acquisition tasks, predominantly for thematic ones, from digital images and use geographic information systems to solve problems in the area of their training. Special attention will be given to the use of open-source tools and research and use of open sources of information.
Brief description of the course
The content of the course is based on the following domains:
1. Introduction and main concepts of geographic information systems and geographic data.
2. GIS applications – use of the open-source QGIS software.
3. Vector and raster data structure.
4. Data acquisition. Reference systems. Reprojection and georeferencing.
5. Spatial data structures and integration with non-geographic data.
6. Creating and manipulating vector layers.
7. Attribute table and external alphanumeric data tables.
8. Spatial analysis operators with vector data.
9. Creation and management of GIS database; spatial databases.
10. Geovisualization of results.
11. Advanced search and exploration of information in GIS: features and algorithms.
12. Application to case study using geographic information from open data.
