Course aims
Main subject. To provide students with a working understanding of the theoretical perspectives and concepts that define the sociology of sport. To help students develop their “sociological imagination” by critically analyzing the social, political, cultural, and historical context of sport in Estonia and other societies.
Brief description of the course
Sociology of sport within the sport sciences. What is sport? Sport as a sociological concept. Emergence and diffusion of sport over time. Sociological theories and sport. What roles does sport play in society? How do race, ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality influence our sporting opportunities and experiences? Is deviance in sport out of control? Is youth sport really for the children? Sport interrelationships with other social institutions: economic, mass media, politics, religion. Critical analysis and independent thinking will be required of students in this course. Homework assignments (seminar lists, article analysis, and essay) will hone student’s skills in these areas.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has ability to distinguish and apply theoretical models and concepts of the sociology of sport and understand the sociological issues in sport;
- has ability to evaluate the sociological relationships that exist between sport and society institutions and the social processes that operate in these institutions;
- has skills to think and analyse critically the assumptions surrounding the social significance of sport;
- has ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
