Course aims
- to introduce the basics of linguistic theory and main linguistic terminology;
- to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the socio-cultural history and structural evolution of the Russian language.
- to present modern Russian in its geographical and social variation
- to develop students’ skills in analyzing linguistic data and discussing and presenting language related issues
Brief description of the course
Language as a system and linguistics as a science. Structural universals of human language. Synchronic and diachronic linguistic description. Levels and elements of linguistic structures. Language evolution. Indo-European languages; Slavonic languages; Slavonic literacies and first texts. The basics of Church Slavonic and Old Russian. Structural evolution of Russian in XIII-XVII centuries. Language contacts. Russian in contact with other languages. Development of Standard Russian. Social variation in Russian. Russian outside Russia.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will have a deep understanding of how the language works and the reasons behind its structure;
- will be able to use linguistic terminology and analyze linguistic data;
- will have a comprehensive knowledge about the history of Russian and its main structural features on different stages of its development;
- will understand the basics of social variation and will get knowledge of the use of Russian in different contexts;
- will have developed their writing and presenting skills.
