Course aims
To present an overview of system of Russian sounds and intonation. To support acquisition of the Russian sound system. To introduce special traits of the system of Russian sounds, to overview the principles of phonetic changes, to show specifics of the Russian accent and intonation. To support the formation of competence for implementation of the word-formation analysis of words of Russian using modern methods.
To teach features of the functioning of the modern dictionary structure of Russian. To create opportunities for development of skills of the analysis of a lexical meaning and lexical system. To teach the qualified use of various sources, in particular, of dictionaries.
Brief description of the course
The course overviews the Russian phonetics and sounds system. It is aimed at the modern phonetic principles, norms and traits of pronunciation in the Russian language. The ways of proper pronunciation are emphasized. Theoretical matters interchange with practical exercises.
Concepts of modern Russian word formation. Types of morphemes of Russian. Steps of word formation and family of words.
The basic concepts of Russian functional lexicology. Concept of a lexical word meaning etc. Word as a communicative and nominative unit. Hyponyms, hyperonyms, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, etc. in Russian. Word as a sign. Semasiology, onomasiology, etymology. Change of a word's meaning, loan from other languages, etc. Problems of terminology.
Types of phraseological units/idioms. Russian lexicography. Classification of dictionaries of Russian.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired knowledge of Russian phonetic and orthoepic system;
- can independently analyze Russian sounds;
- is able to transcript Russian speech;
- has acquired correct pronunciation ability;
- is able to analyze language material by means of methods of word formation of modern Russian;
- has acquired knowledge about modern directions Russian functional lexicology;
- is able to use the analysis of semantics of language units in view of lexicology;
- is able to use modern methods of the analysis lexical and phraseological units;
- is able to use lexicographic sources professionally.
