Course aims
Focus subject. To give an overview of the features of Bulgarian culture, its development and modern trends.
Brief description of the course
Bulgarian folk culture. Folklore. Folk calendar holidays (kuker, martenitsa etc). Gabrovo and gabrovers. Development of Bulgarian nationality. First Bulgarian country. Origin of Slavic written language. Golden age. Art. Bulgarian churches and monasteries. Archaeological monuments. Tsar Ivan Asen Popular awakening in Bulgaria in the 18th century. Bulgarian liberation (1877-1878). Social-political organisation in the Republic of Bulgaria. National symbols. Bulgaria in the 20th century. Overview of processes of Bulgarian literature from ancient written language to this day. Golden Age of Bulgarian literature. Bulgarian literature in the time of the yoke. Modernism in Bulgarian literature. Complex understandings of modern Bulgarian literature. Main trends and genres in historical development. Influence of world literature on the creative work of Bulgarian writers.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Students have the basic knowledge of Bulgarian culture as a one part of European civilisation.
