Course aims
Communication is an important strategic function in societal and political processes. The developments over past few decades have shown a particularly significant impact of mediated communication. The aim of the given subject is to give an overview of the discipline of political communication and its applicability in the analysis of various socio-political processes. The course is organized to cover different subfields of political science and therefore gives an alternative input into the student's field of specialization. Brief description of the course
Political communication as an object of inquiry. The arenas and actors in the field of political communication, and their arsenal. Technological determinism and the impact of different media. Mediatisation and media democracy. The transforming public sphere. Electoral communications, political campaigning. Governance as political communication: the public sector and its communicativeness.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and can apply the fundamental concepts and models of political communication;
- can link different political communication theories with practical examples, including their own activities in the field of political communication;
- understands the political communication aspects of political processes (politics, governance, democracy) and political transformations (mediatisation, crisis of public communication, the impact of social media, the transformation of journalism etc).
