Course aims
To provide students with the knowledge and specific skills needed for planning, organizing, and analyzing the mathematics teaching process. Additionally, the course covers the nature of mathematical thinking, its individual characteristics, and mathematical ability.
Brief description of the course
Didactics of mathematics as a research domain. Theories of mathematical learning. Mathematical abilities. Learning difficulties.Meaningful learning. Objectives of mathematics education, cognitive and affective taxonomy of learning. Planning mathematics teaching. The structure of mathematics lessons. Teaching methods: development of mathematical concepts; skills training; problem solving; proofs and proveing; practical tasks in mathematics; home assignments. Assessment and grading in mathematics. The teacher of mathematics: style and efficiency.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the key concepts of mathematics didactics;
- can discuss topics outlined in the curriculum, distinguishing essential aspects from non-essential ones, relying on didactic theories and using mathematics didactics terminology correctly;
- is familiar with the main research methods in mathematics didactics and can design a basic study;
- can plan and analyze the teaching process and is proficient in assessment forms and methods for evaluating learning outcomes.
