Course aims
To acquire basic knowledge of school geometry.
Students have solid foundation of mathematical knowledge for teaching school geometry.
To give an overview of the development of Mathematics in the world before XVII Century and of the development of the teaching of mathematics in Estonia.

Brief description of the course
Mathematical foundations for school geometry:
knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques, and reasoning methods of geometry
Creation of the mathematical thinking. Mathematics in Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Ancient Greece and Islamic World. Mathematics in Europa from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the XVII Century. History of the teaching of Mathematics in the Estonian territory.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and understands the fundamental concepts of elementary geometry;
- is able to justify the theorems covered in the course;
- is able to apply the theorem proving methods introduced during the course in new situations;
- is able to solve elementary geometry problems;
- is able to justify the reasoning behind geometric construction problems;
- is able to apply concepts of plane geometry to solve problems in solid geometry;
- has an overview of the level of mathematical knowledge in Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Japan and Islamic Countries;
- knows main mathematicians and their schools in Ancient Greece;
- knows the level of mathematical sciences in Europe during the period from Middle Ages until the beginning of the XVII Century;
- is acquainted with the history of the teaching of Mathematics in the Estonian territory.
