Course aims
Major. To provide students with background knowledge of the history of mathematics and the main phases of its development. The development and attempts at reforming school mathematics in Estonia are also considered.
Brief description of the course
The rise of mathematics among ancient peoples. Mathematics in ancient Egypt, Babylon and Greece. Mathematics in China, India and Islamic countries. Mathematics in Western and Central Europe in VIII- XV centuries. Mathematics in Western and Central Europe in XVI - XVIII centuries. The development of mathematical symbolism. Mathematics in XIX and XX centuries. Attempts at reforming school mathematics in XX century. The rise of Estonian school mathematics, mathematics literature and symbolism.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knows facts of history of mathematics and is able to use literature in volume of the subject.
