Course aims

To obtain knowledge and skills for the research in mathematics.

Brief description of the course

Posing the research problem and goal. The process of selecting the topic of the thesis, specification of the topic and formulating the research problem. Requirements for the contents and the format of the thesis.

Independent work

Preparation of a talk and thorough study of the talk of a fellow student.

The subject could be also passed by performing some practical tasks or internship in a field connected with mathematics outside of Tallinn University.

Learning outcomes in the course

The student acquires the skills of searching electronic information.

The student gets an overview about different forms of study and obtains a skill of using different methods. The student acquires knowledge and skills for selecting and limiting the topic; for posing reseach problem, research question, goal and the tasks; for posing the hypothesis and possibilities of checking the validity of the hypothesis. The student acquires and overview of different types of research work, contents and format of the thesis.
